AT&T Uverse customers in Connecticut are getting a belated holiday gift. Uverse added two channels to the lineup for northeastern sports fans, including teams that play in or around Madison Square Garden. The channels – MSG HD and MSG + HD, feature teams including the New York Islanders hockey team, the New Jersey Devils, and the New York Rangers. This change comes as a result of a federal appeals court ruling in December where Cablevision attempted to block internet service providers AT&T and Verizon from carrying the channels. Cablevision had spun off the channels in 2011, but wanted to decide which providers could access it’s content. Cablevision views the ruling as a “manipulation of federal law by Verizon and AT&T.” Dan York, President of Cotent for AT&T said “After years of seeking access to this programming, we’re pleased to bring MSG HD and MSG + HD to U-verse TV customers. We’re delighted that our U-verse TV customers now have access to these important HD sports channels on reasonable terms. We will continue to work diligently on behalf o four customers to continue enhancing U-verse TV by adding the content they want at fair terms and prices.”

Verizon, a major cable TV provider in addition to being the supplier of Verizon Internet service, is working on a streaming video program that is reportedly comparable to Netflix, according to a recent news story from Reuters. The new programming is in the final planning stages and employees working on the project describe it as being primarily focused on motion pictures and content for children. Industry insiders say the offerings will be served up as on-demand but with the signature Verizon panache. While details are still sketchy, we do know that Verizon has been shopping for content at a number of major production companies. Reports also indicate the company will jump on the Epix movie library, which currently licensed to Netflix but soon to be made available to other providers. Verizon will make the new service available to all of its subscribers, not just their FiOS customers.

Semillitas, a 24 hour animation channel, is now available on Verizon FiOS TV. The show, which targets Hispanic pre-schoolers is part of the La Conexion package which offers over 155 channels — eighteen in high definition. The show is designed to preserve Hispanic language and roots, an important goal of most Latino parents. These same parents recognize that TV watching is an essential way of transmitting a cultural identity. Semillitas focuses on young children from ages 1 to 5. According to the recent Census, Hispanics are the demographic group most responsible for the growth of the American population. Hispanic children, aged five years or younger, currently make up 27% of that total age group inside the U.S. That figure jumps to over 50% in Southwestern markets like Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico.

According to a report released today on the PR Newsire, Verizon is continuing to change how families enjoy and interact with their televisions. This week the company delivered a new version of the Verizon FiOS Interactive Media Guide to subscribers living throughout Delaware, New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area. Currently FiOS boasts that nearly 3,000,000 households are signed up in the tri-state area. FiOS, first Introduced back in 2007, was the first broadband program to bring together content from broadcast television, the Internet and the personal media of each subscriber into one system that manages all of it. Since that year, FiOS has developed into an interactive TV experience which comes with several special and unique applications — such as remote DVR controls, multi-screen viewing, mobile viewing, intuitive search, Internet video, social networking, high-def music, personal media streaming, and on screen account management.

An individual in New York recently posted a message on Yelp, a social network and review site. He wanted to know if anyone could tell him where to find a restaurant or pub in Manhattan that was hooked up to Verizon FiOS for their TV and Internet service. Why would he be interested in the ISP being used in a public eating and drinking establishment? Because he is a University of Texas Longhorns alumni — and he wanted to see the first Texas football game of the season! It seems that the Longhorns recently signed an agreement with Verizon providing that all of the programming broadcast on the Longhorn network be made available to Verizon FiOS customers!
Of course, this type of preferential treatment given to University of Texas in Austin is one of primary reasons Texas A&M has requested to leave the Big 12 conference. They find it too hard to operate under the shadow of the Longhorns. Who knows? Do you think perhaps Comcast, AT&T Uverse, or one

The Toms River News in New Jersey reported yesterday that a Verizon FiOs cable was cut which ended up knocking out phone service to hundreds of its subscribers. Verizon is viewing the act as a form of sabotage and has offered a reward of $50,000 to anyone who can provide information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. The company claims to have had at least twelve acts of sabotage to its property in four eastern states. The first act was on Saturday, the same day a strike was called by Verizon’s wireline union employees in Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Verizon spokesman Lee Gierczynski said his company is taking the matter seriously. He said “this is not about a strike — this is about safety and we are gravely concerned.” He went on to say that many people depend on Verizon phone service including police departments, elderly citizens, schools and hospitals. “This is not an attack on Verizon, but an attack on public safety. It is inexcusable.” The report went on to mention that some individuals picketing Verizon locations have blocked access to different work centers and parking garages, which is unlawful.

Fiber-optics-to-the-door high speed internet; high quality HD television, and high reliability technology. As if all of the reasons to switch to Verizon Fios weren’t enough, high speed internet, media streaming and television become integrated through Fios’ new internet radio stream service beginning immediately. This service is provided by Clear Channel’s IHeartRadio, which consists of 387 radio stations worldwide. Because Fios requires a home computer to transcode television and radio signals, users will be able to enter any URL and play it via any media playing device.
To find out if Fios is one of the internet service providers in my area is my first order of business. High speed internet and entertainment bundling make this an exciting time to get in on the fun.
