The new programming is in the final planning stages and employees working on the project describe it as being primarily focused on motion pictures and content for children. Industry insiders say the offerings will be served up as on-demand but with the signature Verizon panache. While details are still sketchy, we do know that Verizon has been shopping for content at a number of major production companies. Reports also indicate the company will jump on the Epix movie library, which currently licensed to Netflix but soon to be made available to other providers. Verizon will make the new service available to all of its subscribers, not just their FiOS customers.

As a result it is also very light weight. The backing of the phone is covered in kevlar, giving it the necessary strength despite being so thin. The device comes with a 4.3 inch touch-screen and a 1.2 gig dual core processor. The new smart phone is scheduled to hit stores sometime in the early part of November — a Verizon spokesman said an official launch date has not yet been set. The unit has a price tag of $299 with a two year Verizon contract.

Those who remain in the program will begin seeing ads that more personalized while using their mobile devices for web surfing or when they are using Verizon DSL or FiOS, said Jeffrey Nelson, a spokesman for Verizon.

According to an article posted on today’s Bloomberg Businessweek, people who type in incorrect email addresses may now become a target for spam. Spammers are setting up websites with URLs that are very similar to legitimate businesses. They then set up an email address at that website that automatically responds to incoming emails. As an example, an Associated Press reporter was trying to send a note regarding Verizon Internet Service to verizonwireless.com. He mistakenly left off the letter “m” in .com. Someone set up a website at verizonwireless.co — and, of course, that is where his email ended up. He received a response that said: “I’m not in the office right now. I’m on my dream vacation and I promise to get back to you when I return. In the meantime, you should check this site to see how I scored the very best travel deal for my vacation.” Obviously the person owning the site had an affiliate relationship with the travel company he had provided a link to — and was looking for a big fat royalty. Owners of these sites are now being referred to as typeo squatters.

An individual in New York recently posted a message on Yelp, a social network and review site. He wanted to know if anyone could tell him where to find a restaurant or pub in Manhattan that was hooked up to Verizon FiOS for their TV and Internet service. Why would he be interested in the ISP being used in a public eating and drinking establishment? Because he is a University of Texas Longhorns alumni — and he wanted to see the first Texas football game of the season! It seems that the Longhorns recently signed an agreement with Verizon providing that all of the programming broadcast on the Longhorn network be made available to Verizon FiOS customers!

Of course, this type of preferential treatment given to University of Texas in Austin is one of primary reasons Texas A&M has requested to leave the Big 12 conference. They find it too hard to operate under the shadow of the Longhorns. Who knows? Do you think perhaps Comcast, AT&T Uverse, or one

According to a press release datelined Newbury Park, California, September 1, 2011, Verizon has posted a reward of up to $10,000 for any information which may lead to the arrest and the prosecution of those responsible for a number of thefts of copper cables from the Verizon internet service network. According to the story there has been a recent rash of thefts perpetrated by thieves that have cut several thousand feet of copper cable from nine separate locations. The thefts have resulted in damages in the thousands of dollars. Verizon is a major telecommunications company that has a large presence throughout the state of California.

More importantly, according to Verizon officials, the thefts have put the public at risk. Hundreds of customers in Southern California have suffered the loss of telephone and Internet service. Margaret Serjak, the president of Verizon California further stated: “Not only are our customer inconvenienced, but they are also denied a vital communications link. People may not have a way to reach emergency services or loved ones.” She went on to say that Verizon won’t tolerate acts of theft and vandalism against their customers and their communications network. Anyone wishing to report information regarding the thefts is instructed to call 800-997-3287, which is the Verizon Security Department.

Angela Carella, in her column in today’s Stamford Advocate (Connecticut), reports that when Marc Neremberg can’t find anything on television in the evening, he often watches online streaming video. The problem is that during the peak hours of 7 pm to 11 pm there are often hiccups and pauses, and “the quality is about the same as something recorded on an old VHS tape” Nerenberg said. So the Stamford man wasn’t one bit surprised when he read last’s week FCC report that found his cable Internet provider finished dead last in broadband speed during peak times. The FCC reviewed the top 13 broadband providers from across the nation and found, on average, they deliver speeds close to 80% of what they advertise. Cablevision, which serves SW Connecticut and is Marc’s provider, rated lowest at 54%. The clear winner was Verizon Internet Service, and particularly Verizon FiOs — delivering 114% of its promised speed.

According to Nerenberg, his download speed drop sto a real crawl during peak hours. He said “The whole thing is extremely frustrating . I go from watching a movie to getting a buffering message.” The FCC study revealed that only about one-half of all American families even know the speed of broadband they pay for — and most of the others know only the Internet speed their provider has promised.

Channel 10, the NBC affiliate in Knoxville, reported yesterday that Verizon’s 4G LTE network is being rolled out in East Tennessee this week. The Long Term Evolution Service is ten times faster than traditional 3G coverage and will bring high-speed internet options to rural locations where customers previously had few options. According to Thomas Brown, Verizon’s East Tennessee District Manager, many of the areas being covered have not had DSL or any other kind of land-line carriers. “Consider drinking from a faucet or drinking from a fire hose. That’s the difference for our customers,” Brown said. The 4G LTE launch will be complete by Thursday. Prices start at $30 per month for 2 GB of data.

While we are at it, this upgrading of service seems to be happening in many rural areas. According to a report in today’s Kalamazoo Gazette, the Climax telephone company, located in rural Michigan, is receiving $2.2 million in Federal stimulus funding as part of a broadband infrastructure project designed to create jobs and improve service for rural residents. The report stated: “Climax Telephone is providing matching funds of about $2 million to build Fiber-To-The-Premise (FTTP) service, allowing the company to deliver state-of-the-art high-speed broadband, video and voice service to more than 1,000 people in Climax, Scotts and surrounding rural areas.”
